What is backflow?
The water supply system is designed to ensure that water flows to your property under pressure. Backflow is the undesirable reversal of the flow of water from its intended direction in any pipeline or plumbing system back to the main town supply.
There is a risk to public health if there is a cross connection between the potable (drinking water) water supply and a contaminated source. If there is a pressure drop in the water main, a vacuum could be created in the water supply system. Under certain conditions, this creates a siphoning effect and draws liquid from a contaminated source back into the potable supply.
How do we prevent backflow?
Backflow is prevented by installing a backflow prevention devices such as a double-check valve, an RPZ (reduced pressure zone) or a non-return valve. These are used to protect your house or business water supply from possible contamination.
